Brief Overview of Lakers History

If you are a basketball fan, you have undoubtedly heard about the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a basketball team that is part of the NBA that was founded back in 1947. It is one of the most successful franchises in history, with more than 3000 wins. Lakers has been in the NBA finals over 30 times, and second only to the Boston Celtics in NBA championship titles. Some of the greatest players that have ever lived played for this team including Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the great Wilt Chamberlain.

The Beginning of the Franchise

Two individuals by the name of Berger and Chalfen purchased the team for $15,000. The name of the team was changed from Detroit Gems to Lakers because it was relocated to Minnesota, the land of 10000 lakes. Beginning with a first-round pick, George Mikan, as their centre, the team began to improve their overall record. This began a long journey of successive wins, and to counter the great Bill Russell of the Celtics in 1967, the obtained Wilt Chamberlain. From that point on, they were able to compete in many championships, leading to the team we have today.

Lakers in Modern Times

Although they had many wins, it was not until the late 90s that the Lakers began to truly shine. Acquiring Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, they were able to become one of the greatest basketball teams in history. Coached by Phil Jackson, the Lakers went on to five championships using O’Neal and Bryant to their advantage, they have become one of the greatest basketball teams in history. Despite the fact that their record right now is not that great, there is always room for improvement. Perhaps they will find the next Wilt Chamberlain or Kobe Bryant to play for their team, allowing them to once again return to glory.
